Running for a Reason: 14 Miles, 3 Forts, and One Powerful Cause

On a challenging spring day in West Sussex, I laced up my running shoes and took on the iconic 3 Forts Half Marathon – known by many as “The Tough One”. Despite being labelled a half marathon, the course stretches to a gruelling 14 miles, with over 10 of them uphill, winding through the scenic but unforgiving South Downs.
Why? Because this wasn’t just about running. It was about raising awareness and support for a cause that’s deeply personal to me and my family: the Sturge-Weber Foundation.
My daughter lives with Sturge-Weber Syndrome – a rare neurological and skin disorder that can cause seizures, developmental delays, and a host of other complications. Watching her face these challenges with strength and resilience inspired me to push my own limits. Running those miles felt like a small tribute to the strength she shows every day.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of friends, family, and supporters, we raised £5880.46 for the Sturge-Weber Foundation. This funding will go directly towards research, family support, and increasing awareness of this rare condition, making a real difference in the lives of those affected.
The 3 Forts route tested every part of me – physically and emotionally, especially because I strained my calf on the final training run a week before. Thank God for painkillers and Tiger Balm. From steep climbs to wind-swept ridgelines, every step felt like a reminder of why this mattered. And with every mile, I carried not just my own hopes, but the support of an entire community rallying behind our cause.
To everyone who donated, shared our story, or cheered us on: thank you. You’ve helped shine a light on a rare condition, and you’ve shown my daughter – and many others – that they’re not alone.
We may have finished the race, but the journey continues. And with your support, we’re a few steps closer to hope, progress, and a brighter future.
