My time at Bluecoat

Having spent four weeks across the past two months here at Bluecoat, I wanted to write a little about my experience as an intern at Bluecoat.

Throughout my time here I’ve learned a lot about the financial planning process, the client journey, and how advisers assess the best course of action for each client, resulting in bespoke, personalised, and effective financial advice. I have also learnt about how a family-run business functions, and I have seen first-hand how at Bluecoat, the family is at the core of everything we do.

Across the 4 weeks, I have been involved in many different aspects of the business. This ranged from carrying out administrative tasks, such as setting up client meetings, to shadowing David and Robin in their role as advisers, and even assisting with some elements of financial planning research. A major part of my time here at Bluecoat has been spent facilitating the launch of our new client portal, the Bluecoat Hub. This involved uploading and cross-referencing all client details to the Hub, setting up clients’ accounts ready for them to access, liaising with our app developers when we encountered issues, as well as communicating with clients to deal with any problems they may have experienced. To consolidate all my learning across the four weeks, and to relate this to my future role at the Financial Conduct Authority (where I start work in October), I also completed a research project on the importance of regulation in the financial advice industry as a means of combatting the dangers of unauthorised advisers or unregulated investments.

I want to thank Robin, David, and everyone at Bluecoat for making me feel so welcome throughout my time here. Thank you also to all the clients who let me sit in on your meetings, from which I learned a lot.

It’s been a pleasure being a part of the team and I’ve definitely gained some valuable knowledge which I will take forward with me into my career in regulation when I join the FCA in October.
